Life and career
Langer grew up in Boulder, Colorado. He took saxophone lessons from his junior high band teacher, and continued his musical studies in Los Angeles at the University of Southern California, where he earned a master's degree in music performance (1988).
Early in his career, Langer played classical saxophone in Southern California area chamber groups and orchestras. Moving to Hawaii, he took an extended sabbatical from music. However, Jon Basebase, a Honolulu singer/songwriter, persuaded him to begin performing and composing again.
After relocating to Sacramento, Langer wrote and recorded his first album, Never the Same, produced and mixed by Ron Wikso (2009). The title song gained more than 230,000 views on YouTube.
Langer collaborated with smooth jazz guitarist/producer Nils on his second album, Happy Hour (2017). The album's first single, Set Me Free, reached #29 on Billboard's Smooth Jazz Chart in July 2017. The second single, J Street Groove, reached #23 on Billboard in December 2017.
In addition to Langer's winery gigs with musical partner, Kurt Shiflet, he performs with the Steely Dan tribute band Steelin' Dan at festivals, clubs, and other venues.
